The Maine Solar System Model, a colossal and meticulously crafted representation of our solar system, has just gotten a little more complete. After years of dedicated work and community involvement, the model now boasts a fully scaled and detailed representation of Jupiter's moon, Io. This addition marks a significant milestone for the project, which has been a labor of love for University of Maine professor emeritus Kevin McCartney and countless volunteers.
What makes this project truly remarkable is its scale and attention to detail. The model stretches over 150 miles, encompassing eight planets, Pluto, four dwarf planets, and seven notable moons. Each celestial body is carefully calculated to be in perfect proportion to its real-life counterpart, and the distances between them are accurately represented along the route. This level of precision is what sets the Maine Solar System Model apart from others, including the largest solar system model in Sweden, which is still missing key components.
The addition of Io, a golf-ball-sized sphere, is a testament to the project's resilience and the power of community collaboration. Io was damaged several years ago, but thanks to the efforts of MPG Truck and Tractor in Presque Isle, who stored and repainted the 15-foot pole, and the artistic skills of high school students, including Jessica Goodwin's daughter, the moon has been brought back to life. Goodwin, who helped paint the original Io in 2002, expressed her joy in seeing her students and daughter contribute to the project, emphasizing the emotional connection many have to this unique attraction.
The model's appeal extends beyond its scientific accuracy. McCartney highlights the model's ability to attract tourists, with hundreds visiting each year to explore the solar system. The recent additions of a 3D model of the sun and dwarf planets Haumea and Makemake have further enhanced the model's allure, drawing visitors eager to witness the expanding universe of the Maine Solar System Model.
As the project continues to evolve, McCartney is seeking volunteers to help with the repainting of Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. This ongoing community effort is what keeps the model vibrant and ensures its longevity.
