Marco Rubio's recent comments comparing the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) to the historic moon landing have sparked a wave of confusion and debate. As MS NOW host Jonathan Capehart astutely points out, Rubio's analogy is not only bizarre but also raises questions about the Secretary of State's understanding of our nation's achievements.
In a recent interview, Capehart expressed his bewilderment, stating, 'You just gotta hear this bizarre comparison he made.' He then played a clip of Rubio's remarks, where the Secretary of State draws a parallel between the UFC and the moon landing, suggesting that both represent significant feats that no one thought were possible.
'When President Kennedy announced that we were gonna put a man on the moon and return him safely to the Earth, no one thought that was possible, and we did it,' Rubio said. 'We are a nation founded on doing what no one else dared to do, and no one else aspired to do. And at some level, that’s what this whole company, what UFC has been.'
The comments come in the context of a partnership deal between the White House and the UFC, which is organizing a series of cage fights on the White House South Lawn as part of the United States' 250th anniversary celebration. The event, scheduled for Flag Day, June 14, coincides with President Donald Trump's birthday.
Capehart, rather than adding further commentary, chose to let Rubio's words stand for themselves, saying, 'I’mma just leave that alone.'
However, the comparison has not gone down well with many. The idea that the UFC, a brutal and often controversial sport, can be likened to the monumental achievement of the moon landing is seen as a stretch. The moon landing was a symbol of human ingenuity, scientific advancement, and national pride, whereas the UFC is often associated with violence and controversy.
This raises a deeper question: What does it say about our society when we equate a combat sport with one of humanity's greatest achievements? It suggests a certain level of desensitization to violence and a lack of appreciation for the significance of historical milestones.
In my opinion, Rubio's comments are a missed opportunity. Instead of comparing the UFC to the moon landing, he could have highlighted the positive impact of mixed martial arts on communities, the promotion of discipline and self-defense, or the potential for the sport to inspire and unite people. Such an approach could have provided a more constructive and meaningful perspective on the partnership deal.
What this really suggests is that while comparisons can be powerful tools for understanding and communication, they must be made with care and sensitivity. Not all analogies are created equal, and sometimes, they can do more harm than good.
